and the reserve also includes a zoo, waterpark, playground, modellers pond, skating rink, BMX track and an ever-popular licensed cafe. Nelson itself is compact and picturesque to explore, with numerous opportunities for walkers. It has an excellent range of cafes and restaurants that showcase the wonderful produce of the region. The Saturday Outdoor Market is an essential stop for food, jewellery and crafts. Museums, galleries, theatres, cinemas and specialist shops provide ample rainy day activities.

Nelson Region

The variety and beauty of the landscape has attracted artists and craftspeople from all over the world to make their home in the region. The climate has encouraged a growing wine and olive industry. Take time to tour the local vineyards, olive groves, boutique breweries and artist galleries.

Nelson Wilderness

Three National Parks are within easy driving distance from the city. Abel Tasman National Park has golden sand beaches and turquoise blue waters. Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks offer alpine scenery,beech forests and native bird life. Guided tours can take you to the best of the region's fly fishing. Journey over the Takaka Hill to the sweeping coastline of Golden Bay and the world renowned bird sanctuary at Farewell Spit.
